Most stove issues come back to a small number of components: the heating elements themselves, the infinite switches that control them, the wiring connections behind the cooktop, or the main control board. Once one component fails, the others often follow if the underlying cause isn't addressed properly. Here's what we see most often on Ottawa stovetop repair calls.
The most common stove call we get. On coil-element stoves, the element itself has usually failed and needs replacement. On glass-top and ceramic stoves, the failure point is usually the surface element or its receptacle. Sometimes the issue traces back to the infinite switch that controls power to the element rather than the element itself, proper diagnosis is the difference between an inexpensive fix and replacing the wrong part.
If a burner ignores the temperature dial and runs full-blast regardless of setting, the infinite switch has typically failed in the closed position. This is a safety hazard, pots and pans can scorch or warp, and the burner itself can overheat, so it's worth booking quickly rather than working around it.
Glass cooktops crack from sudden temperature shock, dropped pots, or impact damage. Cracks compromise both the cooking surface and the electrical safety of the unit since spills can reach the elements underneath. Replacement of the cooktop glass is the only safe repair.
Induction stoves only heat ferrous (magnetic) cookware. If your induction surface won't activate, first confirm the pan is induction-compatible. If it is, the failure is usually in the induction coil or the control board, both repairable, but they require a technician familiar with induction systems specifically.
Oven failures fall into two categories: the oven won't heat at all, or it heats inconsistently. Both have a handful of likely causes that an experienced technician can narrow down quickly.
The bake element at the bottom of the oven is the most common failure point, it's the component working hardest on every cooking cycle. If only the broil function works (or vice versa), the corresponding element has burned out. If neither works, the cause is more likely the thermostat, the temperature sensor, or the main control board.
An oven that runs hotter than the dial setting almost always has a failed thermostat or a damaged temperature sensor that's reading incorrectly. Modern ovens use a probe-style sensor at the back of the cavity, when it fails, the oven defaults to maximum heat because it never receives the signal to throttle down.
If one side of your oven cooks faster than the other, the bake element may be partially failing or the convection fan motor may be running slowly. Calibration drift is also common on older ovens, what reads as 350°F on the dial may actually be 325°F or 375°F at the rack. We can recalibrate or replace the affected components.
Self-clean cycles run extremely hot, high enough to damage thermostats and control boards if the oven isn't in good working order to begin with. If the cycle won't start, won't complete, or causes the oven to stop working entirely afterward, we replace the failed components and recommend whether self-clean is safe to run on your unit going forward.
Oven doors stop closing properly when the hinges weaken, the gasket seal wears out, or, on units with an electronic locking mechanism, the latch motor fails. A door that doesn't seal lets heat escape, drives up your hydro bill, and makes consistent cooking nearly impossible.
